How do I charge clients sales tax, GST, or HST?

If you service areas that require you to collect sales tax, you can set up your PetPocketbook account so it’s automatically included on your clients’ invoices! To help make tax season a breeze, you can keep track of the sales tax you collect in the Taxes tab of our Reports dashboard too!

Setting up sales taxes

In the Client billing tab of your Settings, tap “add sales tax”.

In the pop-up window, enter the name of the tax and the tax rate. It’s helpful to use the name of state or locale requiring the tax, especially if you have clients in different locales that have different tax rates. By default, we’ll auto-populate the state from your company profile as the name of your tax rate.

Can I have multiple tax rates?

Yes! If you have clients in different areas, you can set up as many tax rates as you need from your Settings. You can then customize each client’s tax rate right from their profile! Your first tax rate is automatically set as your default tax rate for all clients, but if that is not what you want, just turn on the “set as default” toggle when adding or editing the rate that you’d like to set as your default.

For example, if you service both the New York City area and New Jersey, you can set up both tax rates. Since NYC is your default, all clients would be taxed at this rate unless you customize their tax rate.

Let’s say your client, Ruby, lives and gets walks in New Jersey. We’ll need to customize her family’s tax rate in their profile! From the Clients tab, go to the Billing tab in Ruby’s family profile. You’ll notice the family is on your default rate for NYC, but you’ll be able to tap the dropdown to select the NJ sales tax rate instead. Once selected, we’ll automatically apply the new tax rate going forward!

What if I have some clients who are not subject to sales tax?

No problem! You can set all applicable tax rates in your company Settings. For clients who are not subject to sales tax, simply toggle off “Apply sales tax” in the Billing tab of their client profile. No taxes will then be added to invoices for this family.

Can I choose which services are taxable?

Yes! When adding or editing services, you can choose which services are taxable by toggling on the option to apply sales tax. Once this is toggled on, we’ll use your default tax rate unless you’ve customized the tax rate for the client!
