How do I set up staff compensation?
One of the most painful parts of running a pet services business can be keeping track of staff compensation 🏦. Lucky for you, we've made it easy to set up and track what your staff members have earned based on the appointments that they complete!
⚠️ Compensation settings are only available to users with Owner level access in PetPocketbook.
Here's how it works:
Go to your Staff tab on your computer or tablet and choose the staff member that you'd like to set up compensation for. This takes you to their profile page, where you can tap edit to update your settings for this individual on your team. You can update staff pay at any point during the pay period, and it will apply for the entirety of that pay period.
On the edit profile page, you can choose between three methods of setting up your staff member's pay rates: % commission, fixed $ per appointment, and salary.
Varying compensation by service
If you choose % Commission or Fixed $ per appointment as the compensation method, you'll see an additional field where you can choose to vary compensation by service or keep it the same across all of your services.
- If you select No, you'll be setting a single pay rate (whether it's an exact $ amount or a % of what your clients pay you) that'll be applied to any service that this staff completes
- If you select Yes, you'll be prompted to set a pay rate for every service that your company offers
⚠️ In this case, you'll need to input a value for every service (e.g. enter "0" if there should be no value).
Setting pay rates for services involving multi-pet families
If you chose to set a separate $ amount to pay your staff for every service, you may also need to set a separate pay rate for additional pets in the same family, if you charge your clients differently for additional pets.
For example: You charge $25 for a walk for 1 dog, but you charge $30 for a walk for 2 dogs in the same family. In this case, you're charging $5 for the additional pet in the 2-dog family. Let's say you are paying your staff $12.50 of the $25 that you charge for a walk for 1 dog.
- If you choose "No" for whether the pay amount differs for additional dogs in the same household, the pay rate that you've set for each service would be applied for each pet receiving the service. In the example set above, you'd be paying $12.50 for each pet in the 2-dog family, and therefore $25 of the $30 that you charge would be paid to your staff.
- If you choose "Yes" instead, you'll be prompted to set the rate that you'd like to pay your staff for additional pets in multi-pet families for each service that you offer. So instead of paying your staff $12.50 for additional pets in the family, you can choose to pay an amount for each service that is equal to or less than what you are charging for additional pets.
Because your pay rates can differ for additional pets in multi-pet families, we also separate out additional pet appointments and compensation in your staff's compensation breakdown.
Guaranteed minimums
Guaranteed minimums are exactly what they sound like! You can guarantee your staff a certain amount of compensation for each pay period regardless of the appointments that they complete on their schedule. If this field is set to " Yes", a new field will appear where you can specify the minimum amount that you're committing to paying each pay period.
For example: The guaranteed minimum has been set to $500 for Chris.
- If Chris completed fewer appointments than what would earn him $500 for a pay period, PetPocketbook will show his compensation for the pay period as $500.
- If Chris earned more than $500 from appointments that he completed in a pay period, PetPocketbook will show his compensation as whatever he is owed based on the appointments that he completed.
